Warbirds, Wings and Wheels Show Flying into Long Island’s Aviation Museum

September 4, 2021 - September 5, 2021

Long Islanders can get close to vintage aircraft, watch flying demonstrations and take part in flights. Here’s what you need to know.

Aircraft enthusiasts are in for a high-flying treat this Labor Day weekend.

The American Airpower Museum, at Hangar 3, 1230 New Highway, Republic Airport, Farmingdale, is set to host its “Warbirds, Wings and Wheels Show” on Sept. 4 and 5. The show is slated to run from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on both days.

“We thought the best way to celebrate the end of summer was to have two days of vintage airplanes and automobiles, two things Americans have a love affair with!” the museum wrote in a news release.

On Sept. 4, vintage biplanes from the Bayport Aerodrome Society are due to land on the tarmac and taxi up to park on AAM’s ramp at Hangar 3. On display with the biplanes will be vintage cars from the Model A Ford Club of Long Island, which include Model A and T Fords, plus others. The Museum’s sponsor, Cockpit USA, will donate one flight jacket to the winner of the best car and one flight jacket for the winner of the best airplane contests.

The museum’s WWII squadron on Sept. 5 is set to fire up its engines and lift off to perform flight maneuvers over Republic Airport. Aerial demonstrations will feature several flybys by AAM’s vintage military aircraft that played pivotal roles in United States WWII victories.

Some of the vintage World War II-era aircraft set to fly on Sept. 5 include the P-51D Mustang, P-40 Flying Tiger, North American AT-6D Texans, Grumman TBM Avenger Torpedo Bomber, Douglas C-47 Skytrain, and more.

On both days of the event, people can experience living history flights — weather permitting — on the AAM’s 1939 Red Waco UPF-7 Biplane and North American AT-6D Texans.

The admission to the museum is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and veterans, $10 for children ages 5 to 12.

The Living History Flights are sold separately. The American Airpower Museum flight experiences are $300 for members and $350 for non-members, while the WACO Bi-plane flight experiences are $250 for members and $300 for non-members.

No tickets or pre-registration is necessary either day, either for museum admission or the flights. Flights can be arranged by inquiring with the museum representative at AAM’s Hangar 3 each day.
