Warbird Photo Contest

The photos submitted to the Warbird Photo Contest get more interesting each year and we are looking forward to your entries in the 2009 edition of the contest. Please read the rules carefully. Keep those cameras clicking!

ELIGIBILITY: Amateur photographers only, who are current members of the EAA Warbirds of America and their dependent children, stepchildren or other legal dependents of the member. Photos by these members under the age of 18, will enter the JUNIOR Category. An amateur photographer is one who does not make more than 5 percent (5%) of his or her living through taking photographs. Any one member who has won a first place in any two years, or at least two first places in one year within the past six years (2003-2008) will be ineligible to enter further contests.

LOCATION AND DATE: The photos may be taken anywhere in the world and at any time within the past 24 months (March 1, 2007 through February 28, 2009), as long as the subject is a warbird-type aircraft and the photographer is an active EAA Warbirds of America member or dependent. The entries must be postmarked before midnight, March 1, 2009, to be eligible.

SUBJECTS: All photos entered must have a warbird as the main subject and must have been taken by the entrant. Current military aircraft are considered ineligible. Only photos of privately owned or museum-owned ex-military piston-powered or turbine-powered aircraft are eligible. Photos can be taken with any type of color film or camera, may be processed and printed by anyone, may be color prints or transparencies, and may be any workable size up to and including 8 x 12 inches. They should be un-mounted and must not exceed 8 x 12 inches. They may be spotted, but may not be composites, montages, multiple prints, electronically altered or photos of artwork. Digital photos are acceptable, as long as they have not been electronically altered.

    CATEGORIES:
    1. Ground-to-ground—This includes photos of the main subject aircraft with its wheels on the ground or an amphibian aircraft maneuvering in the water, whether on static display, taxiing, or on takeoff or landing roll. There can be other aircraft in the photo that are not on the ground, but the main subject must be.
    2. Ground-to-air—This will include shots of aircraft in fly-bys or in takeoff or landing status where there is a discernible amount of airspace between the wheels and the ground. It is any photo taken from the ground of a warbird in flight.
    3. Air-to-air—Any photo taken of one or more warbirds in flight from another aircraft.
    4. People – Any photograph with a warbird theme that has in its’ main subject, one or more people who are directly involved with the operation of that warbird, such as crewmembers, or military reenactors using the warbird for a background.
    5. Junior – Any photograph submitted by a person under the age of 18, regardless of subject matter, i.e. ground-to-ground, ground-to-air, air-to-air, or people.

JUDGING: Entries will be judged on the basis of general warbird interest and suitability of the photo to the category in which it is entered. Technical excellence is, or course, a desired factor, but any well-focused and exposed photo has as good a chance as any other to win, if the subject matter is good. All decisions of the judges are final.

    ENTRY FEE: None

RESTRICTIONS: Entries may not have been entered in any similar contest, nor shall any closely similar picture or situation be offered for publication elsewhere during the eligibility period of this contest.

MODEL RELEASE: A model release must be obtained from recognizable persons in the photo only if and when requested by the EAA Warbirds of America. Meanwhile, keep the names and addresses of such subjects on file.

NEGATIVES: Hold onto them. Do not submit them unless requested by EAA Warbirds of America.

RETURNS: No entry will be returned and all entries become the property of the EAA Warbirds of America. They will be added to the permanent Warbirds photo collection owned and maintained by the organization and will be used as the organization sees fit. However, any time the photo is published or used, the photographer will be given credit for his or her work.

ENTRY FORMS: No form is needed, but each entry must have affixed to the back of each print, or carefully printed on the slide mount, information containing the following data: Name, address and phone number of the participant, EAA and Warbird membership numbers, and category into which the photo should be placed. (Please do not write directly on a print; tape a piece of paper on the back with the desired information.)

QUANTITY: Each entrant may submit up to five photos and/or transparencies in each category. Any more than five entries in any category will void all of the entrant’s photos in that category. No entrant will be awarded more than one prize in any category.

AWARDS: There will be a First, Second and Third prize in each category, and as many Honorable Mentions as the judges choose to make, depending on the total number of entries. Prizes will be as follows:
First Place - One year complimentary membership in EAA and EAA Warbirds of America
Second Place – One year complimentary membership in EAA Warbirds of America
Third Place -- $25 gift certificate for EAA Warbirds of America merchandise.
The winning photos will be published in Warbirds magazine.
